“Alfred Had Me Made”

Ring of the Realm was born to honour the enduring legacy of King Alfred the Great — the warrior-visionary whose courage, passion, and deep loyalty to his people saw him defeat the Vikings and lay the foundations of England. Through the centuries, the flame of his vision burned bright and far, breathing life into a realm of nations that would one day circle the globe.

Inspired by the ancient words of the Alfred Jewel, I carve each piece by hand to carry the spirit of the free and thriving culture he forged from chaos and darkness. To hold the quiet strength of belief that still whispers across time — the golden thread he cast, gently weaving our past into our future. A living touchstone. A silent vow.

This is jewellery that remembers. Jewellery that invites you to carry the story forward.

The Process

Each Ring of the Realm piece is lovingly handcrafted and finished in silver or gold here on Dartmoor, Devon — once a part of the ancient Kingdom of Wessex.

Every piece is unique and made to order. It takes its time, crafted slowly with patient hands and long, quiet hours — the slow way, the old way. No two are ever quite the same, because each one carries its own small story, shaped by hand and heart in the land where Alfred’s story continues to unfold.

The
Jewel

The Alfred Jewel was discovered by a ploughman in a Somerset field in 1693. Inscribed with the ancient words “AELFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN” — “Alfred Had Me Made” — it is believed to have been commissioned by Alfred the Great himself. One of the rare aestels, or reading pointers, he gifted to monasteries across his kingdom, it stands as a quiet symbol of his dream to bring peace, learning, beauty, and wisdom to a land fallen into darkness.

These same words — “Alfred Had Me Made” — lie at the heart of Ring of the Realm designs. They are carved to remind the wearer of Alfred’s spirit: his strength, vision, and deep belief in crafting something that endures.
