The Great
Alfred the Great (849–899), King of Wessex, was a true warrior-visionary — a polymath who, despite years of chronic illness, stood against wave after wave of Viking invasions and fought to protect and unite a fractured land.
Through courage and a deep devotion to his people, he earned their love and the rare title “the Great” — the only English king ever honoured in this way.
His spirit lives on through a powerful legacy of resilience, justice, and unity. Alfred helped shape the national ideals of England and, in turn, those of the wider English-speaking world — the realm — that was born from it.
Betrayal, Exile, and Triumph
In January 878, as Alfred’s court celebrated the end of Christmas at Chippenham, the Viking warlord Guthrum — Alfred’s greatest adversary — launched a surprise attack and laid siege to the town. In that dark moment, the betrayal by some of his own nobles, councillors, and perhaps even Rome, was laid bare.
Rather than flee to the continent as so many Anglo-Saxon kings had done before him, Alfred refused to abandon his people. He retreated to Athelney in the Somerset Levels, marshlands he knew well from hunting trips in his youth, and there, surrounded by his family and a small band of loyal companions, he began a fierce campaign of guerrilla warfare against the Viking invaders.
Word spread like wildfire across the kingdom: the king had not forsaken them and, just four months later, the people of Wessex answered Alfred’s call. Choosing freedom over servitude, they gathered at Egbert’s Stone, filled with renewed hope and defiance. What followed was the decisive Battle of Edington — a hard-won victory that crushed the great heathen army and restored Alfred to his throne.
Statecraft
After victory, Alfred turned his energy toward rebuilding a broken land. He revived old Roman settlements and created a network of fortified “burhs” — strongholds that served as defensive bastions, administrative centres, and vibrant hubs of trade. He reorganised the army for more reliable defence and expanded naval forces to guard the coast against future Viking raids.
He tackled corruption rigorously by stripping land and titles from members of the ruling class who abused their power. Alfred then created the Domboc — the Doom Book — a remarkable legal code that wove together biblical wisdom, Roman law, and Anglo-Saxon custom. It placed heavy emphasis on mercy, fairness, and equal justice for all, regardless of sex or class, and laid important foundations for the development of English Common Law.
Education, faith, and culture sat at the heart of his vision. He founded a court school open to both nobles and commoners, revived monasteries, and championed learning. Believing his people deserved access to the greatest works in history, Alfred commissioned translations into Old English — and personally translated several, including Pope Gregory’s Pastoral Care, and works by Boethius and Augustine.
Legacy
Alfred’s dream of a united England — profoundly shaped by Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which first portrayed the Anglo-Saxons as a single people with a shared Christian destiny — was not fully realised in his own lifetime, but was carried forward by his descendants.
His son, Edward the Elder, advanced the reconquest of Viking-held territories, yet it was his grandson Aethelstan who completed Alfred’s vision in 927. By seizing York and the last Viking stronghold in Northumbria, Aethelstan became the first ruler to govern the whole of what we now recognise as England, adopting the title “King of the English.”
But the true foundation of this realm lay far deeper than lines on a map. It was the enduring love that Alfred’s people held for him, and their faith in the vision he inspired: a belief in freedom, courage, and hope for the future, that bound them together and gave rise to England itself.
